How to Choose a Wedding Photographer (Without Only Comparing Prices)

Your wedding photographs are, for most couples, the only physical thing that survives the day and gets handed down. That makes the choice of photographer something more than a comparison of quotes. Here is a sane way to work through it.

1. Decide on your style first

Your style is where your imagination and your actual plans meet. If you are dreaming of a windswept outdoor shoot but having a ballroom reception, choose for the reality, not the daydream. A classic gown rarely produces bohemian photographs, however good the photographer is. When you browse a portfolio, look hardest at the shoots that resemble your own plans — not the most beautiful image on the page.

2. Set a budget — but do not let it decide alone

Of course you need a number. Just do not let it be the only one. If you catch yourself comparing quotes and nothing else, stop and ask what this shoot is actually for. When the output is meant to last decades, the cheapest quote is rarely the right one.

3. Do the research that is not on the website

A website and an Instagram feed are the first stop, but they only show you what the photographer chose to show. Ask couples who have actually been photographed by them: did the files arrive when promised? What were they like on the day? Was the direction comfortable or exhausting? An honest answer from a past client tells you more than the best frame in the portfolio.

4. Ask the specific questions

How many photographs are delivered, and how many are fully edited? Do you get every frame or only a selection? What is the delivery time? What happens if the weather turns? Is transfer included? Be careful with anyone who cannot answer these plainly. (For the record, ours: every photograph is delivered, there is no limit on poses, and transfers are included.)

5. It has to feel right

You will spend hours with these people on a day that matters. If your messages get warm, quick, patient answers before you have paid anything, that is usually how the shoot day will go too. Technical skill is the floor, not the ceiling.
