Engagement & Save-the-Date Shoots: Timing, Wardrobe and What to Expect

One of the first questions we hear once the ring is on: “When should we do the engagement shoot, and how do we turn it into our save-the-date?” As a wife-and-husband team who has spent years photographing couples in Göreme, here's how we usually walk newly engaged couples through the timing and the practical side of it.

Engagement session and save-the-date photo — same shoot?

They're the same session used two ways. The engagement shoot itself is a morning or evening spent photographing the two of you, the ring, and the Cappadocia landscape. Once you pick a favourite frame from that session and put it on a card or a digital announcement, that same photo becomes your save-the-date. You don't need to book two separate sessions — one sunrise or sunset covers both purposes.

How far ahead of the wedding should you book it?

This is the question we hear most. As a general guide, if you plan to send save-the-dates about 8–10 months before the wedding, book the shoot a month or two earlier than that — roughly 9–12 months out. That leaves enough room for retouching, card design, and either printing or sending the digital version without a rush. If you're planning a dedicated trip to Cappadocia around the shoot, it helps to lock the date early against your own travel calendar too.

Fitting the photo onto a save-the-date

Most card designers or online templates call for either a portrait or a landscape frame, and some need blank space at the top or side for text. Tell us which format you're working with and we'll shoot a mix of classic and text-friendly compositions during the session, so you have options once it's time to design the card.

What to wear

An engagement shoot doesn't call for wedding-day formality. Coordinating tones rather than matching outfits tend to work best — one lighter, one darker, or both in a neutral palette. Long, flowing fabric moves beautifully in the valley breeze, while busy patterns tend to compete with the landscape. Since you'll be walking, comfortable shoes matter more than heels, which struggle on the dirt paths. Bring a shawl or jacket for cool mornings, and if you like, use part of your unlimited outfit changes to shift into something more relaxed partway through.

Where and when

The best light for an engagement session is the same as for a wedding shoot — sunrise or sunset. We pick you up from your hotel and take you to some of Göreme's quietest viewpoints; roughly an hour to ninety minutes gives most couples more frames than they know what to do with. Balloons overhead or wild horses crossing at dusk make a wonderful bonus if they happen to be out that morning or evening, but nobody can promise either — the valley itself is enough for strong photographs on its own.

Picking the frame for your card

Narrowing hundreds of frames down to one is hard for most couples. A few things help: a shot where both faces are clear and the smile looks unguarded tends to age best on paper. A wide frame that shows off the valley reads as unmistakably Cappadocia, while a close-up draws the eye to the ring and the small details — picking one of each isn't a bad idea, one for the card and one for social media. After the shoot

Every photo from the session is yours, and 20 of your favourites are hand-retouched. Once you've picked your save-the-date image, the rest are yours to use on your wedding website, social media or in messages to guests.
